Australia's Amazing Wildlife (Behind Bars)

"Kangaroos?" said Wendy, on hearing that I hadn't yet seen any that weren't lying with their legs in the air on the side of the road.
"We have hordes of kangaroos around our house. Hordes".

So we went for a walk up a hillside to find some, but Cody the dog must have scared them all off because we didn't see any. So we went for a long drive, peering into the shadows where the kangaroos were possibly lounging on their elbows. But they were lounging just out of sight. A long detour to the golf course was next - the kangaroos favourite hang-out spot in the neighbourhood.

"Look!", said Wendy, "Up there - on the hillside!"
Way off towards the horizon, on a remote hillside, were three brown dots.
"That's kangaroos!". But the dots weren't hopping.

Eventually I threw the towel in, and gave up on seeing live kangaroos in the wild. Instead, we went to the Healesville Animal Sanctuary and saw some behind chicken mesh instead. The sanctuary had a lot of other never-before-seen animals in its enclosures: fruit bats, echidna (cross between a porcupine and an anteater), platapi in the "History Making Platapusary" which not only made history but endless jokes, and this, the cutest animal of all:
