I'm traveling from Johannesburg to San Francisco. It's pretty much half way round the world: the shortest journey (both in time and distance) would be go westwards, via a direct flight to the US. But I'm a fan of the slower, more indirect routes, so I'm taking 6 weeks to go via an initial trip into East Africa, cross the Australian continent by train and island hop across New Zealand to the US West Coast.
